Warning signs your brakes need attention
Brakes rarely fail without warning. These are the signs we see most often, and what they usually mean.
- Squealing or squeaking when you brake. Usually the wear indicator telling you the pads are getting low. Book a check this week.
- Grinding or scraping. The pads are likely worn through and metal is touching the disc. Stop driving if you can and call us; every kilometre adds disc damage.
- Shudder or vibration through the pedal or steering wheel. Often warped or unevenly worn discs. Skimming may fix it if there is enough material left.
- Soft, spongy or low pedal. Points to air or moisture in the brake fluid, a leak, or a failing master cylinder. Treat it as urgent.
- Pulling to one side under braking. A sticking calliper, a seized slider or uneven pad wear.
- Brake or ABS warning light, longer stopping distances or a burning smell. Could be a worn pad sensor, low fluid or an ABS fault. Our diagnostic equipment reads the actual fault code rather than guessing.
What a brake repair at RS involves
Inspection first
We measure pad and disc thickness and disc runout, check the fluid, inspect callipers, hoses and the handbrake, and read any ABS fault codes. You get a clear explanation and a quote. Nothing is replaced without your approval.
Brake pads
Replaced in axle pairs (both front or both rear), with sliders cleaned and lubricated and wear sensors renewed. We fit OEM-grade pads matched to your make and model.
Discs: skim or replace
If the discs are above the manufacturer’s minimum thickness and not cracked, skimming restores a flat surface and cures shudder at lower cost. Below minimum, scored or heat-damaged, we replace them. We show you the measurements either way.
Brake fluid, callipers, hoses and handbrake
Brake fluid absorbs moisture, which lowers its boiling point and softens the pedal; most manufacturers recommend a change every two years. Sticking callipers, perished hoses and handbrake cables or shoes are repaired or replaced as needed.
Every job is covered by our 10,000 km or 6-month workmanship warranty.
How long it takes and what affects the cost
A pad replacement on one axle is typically a few hours’ work. Pads and discs on both axles, a fluid flush or a calliper repair takes longer. We give you a realistic turnaround when we quote and tell you if a part has to be ordered.
What moves the price:
- Pads only, or pads and discs
- Whether the discs can be skimmed or must be replaced
- Front, rear or both axles
- Your make and model (larger, performance and European vehicles use bigger, costlier components)
- Wear sensors, brake fluid and any calliper or hose work
Rather than publish a number that will not match your car, we quote for free, for your exact vehicle, before we start.

Frequently Asked Questions
How often should brake pads be replaced?
There is no fixed interval. Pad life depends on your driving, the vehicle's weight and how much stop-start traffic you sit in. The only reliable answer is a measurement, which we take at every service.
Can I keep driving with squealing brakes?
A light squeal is usually a wear indicator, so book a check soon. Grinding means the pads are finished and the discs are being damaged, so stop driving and call us.
Do I need new discs every time I replace pads?
No. If the discs are above minimum thickness and in good condition, new pads alone or pads with skimmed discs is fine. We measure and show you first.
Do you work on all makes, including electric vehicles?
Yes. Petrol, diesel, hybrid and EV. Electric vehicles rely on regenerative braking and often need brake servicing to prevent corrosion from under-use; we handle that too.
Is there a warranty on brake repairs?
Yes. Our workmanship is covered for 10,000 km or 6 months, whichever comes first.
