Signs of a blown head gasket or a damaged cylinder head

If you see any of these, stop driving and have the car checked:

• Overheating, or a temperature gauge that climbs in traffic and drops on the open road
• White smoke from the exhaust, often with a sweet smell, which is coolant burning in the cylinders
• Coolant loss with no visible leak, so you keep topping up the expansion tank
• Bubbles in the expansion tank or pressure building in the cooling system soon after starting
• Milky, light-brown oil on the dipstick or under the filler cap (coolant mixing with oil)
• Rough idle or misfire, especially when cold, as compression leaks between cylinders
• Oil in the coolant or a greasy film in the expansion tank
• Loss of power after an overheating episode

Several of these overlap with other faults (a failing water pump, a stuck thermostat, a blocked radiator, a cracked block), which is why we test before we quote.

What a cylinder head repair involves

Diagnosis first

We confirm the fault before anything comes apart: a cooling-system pressure test, a combustion-gas (block) test on the coolant, a compression and leak-down test where appropriate, and a dealer-level scan for misfires and temperature history. You get a clear answer about what has failed, and what caused it.

Head off, measured and tested

The head is removed and sent for cleaning, crack testing and pressure testing. It is measured for flatness against the manufacturer’s limit. Valves, guides and seats are inspected, and the block face is checked too.

Skimming, valve work and gasket

If the head is warped within limits it is skimmed (machined flat) to the correct surface finish, which matters on modern multi-layer steel gaskets. Valves and seats are refaced or replaced as needed, guides and stem seals renewed, and the head refitted with a new quality OEM-grade head gasket, new head bolts where the manufacturer specifies stretch bolts, and the correct torque sequence. We then refill and bleed the cooling system, check for leaks and road test.

Fixing the cause

A head gasket rarely fails on its own. Most are the result of an overheat caused by a thermostat, water pump, fan, radiator or coolant leak. We find and fix that cause as part of the job, otherwise the new gasket will go the same way.

Repair or replace the cylinder head?

• Repair (skim and recondition) is the right answer when the head is warped within the manufacturer’s minimum-thickness limit, cracks are absent or repairable, and the valve seats and guides are serviceable.
• Replace when the head is cracked between valve seats or into a water jacket, has already been skimmed to its limit, is badly eroded, or when replacement is cheaper than the machining needed. We quote both options so you can decide with the numbers in front of you.

What affects the cost of a head gasket or cylinder head repair

We do not quote a fixed price because the job depends on what the tests reveal. The main drivers are:

• Engine layout. A four-cylinder with one head is a smaller job than a V6 or V8 with two, and some engines are far harder to access.
• Head condition. A skim and pressure test is one thing; valve seats, guides, crack repair or a replacement head is another.
• Parts. Gasket set, head bolts, seals, coolant, oil and filter, plus whatever caused the overheat (thermostat, water pump, radiator, fan).
• Collateral damage. A severe overheat can affect the timing components, the turbo or the block.
