What is included in a major service

A major service includes everything in a minor service, plus the longer-interval items. At RS this typically covers:

• Engine oil and oil filter replaced with the correct grade for your vehicle
• Air filter replaced
• Spark plugs replaced on petrol engines
• Cabin (pollen) filter and fuel filter replaced where the schedule calls for it
• Brake fluid checked and replaced if due
• Coolant, power steering and washer fluids checked and topped up
• Brakes, suspension, steering, exhaust, belts, hoses and tyres inspected
• Battery, charging system and lights tested
• Dealer-level diagnostic scan with fault codes read and cleared
• Our 52-point inspection, with a written report of anything that needs attention
• Service book stamped and service history recorded

What a major service does not automatically include

Some jobs are set by mileage or condition rather than by the service interval: cambelt or timing chain replacement, brake pads and discs, clutch work, shock absorbers, and gearbox or differential oil. If our inspection shows one of these is due, we quote it first and only proceed with your approval. Transmission and differential work is handled in-house by our sister company, RS Gearbox & Differentials.

Major service or minor service?

The two alternate. A minor service is the lighter oil-and-checks service; a major service adds the longer-interval replacements and a deeper inspection. When is a major service due

In most manufacturer schedules a major service falls every second service, which works out to roughly every 30,000 km, or every two years for low-mileage cars, with a minor service in between. Some schedules place the major at 45,000 km, and some high-mileage or fleet use brings it forward. Your owner’s manual and service book set the exact interval for your car.

Book a major service without waiting if your service plan has just ended and the last dealer service was a minor, if the service reminder is on, if the engine idles roughly or uses more fuel than usual, or if it has been more than two years since the last major.

What a major service costs

A major service costs more than a minor because more parts are replaced and more time is spent. What it costs for your car depends on the make, model and engine, which is why we do not publish a single number.
