Clutch and Flywheel Repairs in Sandton and Midrand

A clutch that slips, judders or needs a leg of steel does not fix itself, and Johannesburg's stop-start traffic only shortens its life.

RS Service Centre replaces clutch kits, skims or replaces flywheels including dual-mass units, and repairs clutch hydraulics and cables on every make. We diagnose first, quote before we start, and fit only OEM-grade parts at our Sandton (Wynberg) and Midrand (Halfway House) workshops.

Signs your clutch is on its way out

  • Slipping. The revs climb but the car does not pick up speed, especially uphill or when overtaking. The friction plate is worn.
  • Burning smell after hills, towing or traffic. Overheated friction material, usually from slipping.
  • Judder or shudder on take-off. Can be a worn or contaminated clutch plate, or a failing dual-mass flywheel.
  • Very hard or very soft pedal. A stiff pedal often points to the pressure plate or cable; a soft, sinking pedal usually means the hydraulics (master or slave cylinder) rather than the clutch itself.
  • Difficulty getting into gear, or grinding on engagement. The clutch may not be fully disengaging, or the release bearing is worn.
  • Rattle at idle that changes when you press the pedal. Classic dual-mass flywheel noise on many diesels and turbo petrols.

If the pedal suddenly goes to the floor, do not keep driving. Call us and we will advise.

What a clutch repair at RS involves

Diagnosis first

Not every clutch complaint is a clutch. We check the hydraulics, cable, pedal and gearbox behaviour before recommending a kit. If the fault is a master or slave cylinder, that is a much smaller job and we will tell you.

Clutch kit replacement

The gearbox comes out and we fit a complete OEM-grade kit: friction plate, pressure plate and release bearing. We inspect the rear main seal, input shaft seal and mounts while everything is apart, so you do not pay for the same labour twice later.

Flywheel: skim or replace

A solid flywheel with heat marks or scoring can often be skimmed flat. A dual-mass flywheel cannot be skimmed; it is checked for free play and rock and replaced when out of specification. We show you the measurement before you decide.

Hydraulics, cables, and the gearbox question

Master, slave and concentric slave cylinders are replaced and the system bled; worn cables are adjusted or replaced. If the diagnosis points to the gearbox, our sister company RS Gearbox & Differentials repairs and rebuilds manual and automatic gearboxes, so the car does not need to go anywhere else.

Every job is covered by our 10,000 km or 6-month workmanship warranty.

How long it takes and what affects the cost

A clutch kit replacement on a typical passenger car is normally a full working day, because the gearbox has to come out. Four-wheel drives, cars with tight access, and jobs that include a dual-mass flywheel or hydraulic work can take longer. We confirm the turnaround and parts availability when we quote.

What moves the price:

  • Whether the fault is hydraulic (a cylinder) or a worn clutch (a kit)
  • Whether the flywheel can be skimmed, or is a dual-mass unit that must be replaced
  • Your make, model and engine: diesels, turbo petrols and 4x4s use larger, costlier kits
  • Labour time, which varies widely by gearbox layout
  • Any seals, mounts or a concentric slave cylinder done while the gearbox is out

We do not publish a single figure because clutch jobs vary too much between cars. We quote for free, for your exact vehicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a clutch last?

It depends on the car, the load and the driver. Heavy traffic, hill starts and riding the clutch at robots all shorten it. Slipping or judder is the signal, not a mileage.

Can I keep driving with a slipping clutch?

For a short while, gently. But slipping generates heat that can damage the flywheel and leave you stranded, turning a kit replacement into a bigger job. Book a diagnosis soon.

Do I have to replace the flywheel with the clutch?

Not always. A solid flywheel in good condition can be skimmed or left alone. A dual-mass flywheel is replaced if it is out of specification, because fitting a new clutch to a failing DMF wastes the labour.

Is it my clutch or my gearbox?

Slipping, judder and a changing bite point are usually clutch. Grinding in one gear, jumping out of gear or whining are usually gearbox. We check both, and RS Gearbox & Differentials handles gearbox repairs.

Is there a warranty on clutch repairs?

Yes. Our workmanship is covered for 10,000 km or 6 months, whichever comes first.

Noisy, leaking rear differential on an Isuzu D-Max. Was invited to see the car on the lift, got a reasonable itemised quote, had the car back in four days as promised and was shown the worn parts.
