What is included in a minor service

A minor service covers the items that wear or degrade with normal driving. At RS this typically includes:

• Engine oil drained and replaced with the correct grade for your vehicle
• New oil filter
• Fluid levels checked and topped up: coolant, brake fluid, power steering, washer fluid
• Brakes, belts, hoses and tyres inspected
• Lights, wipers and battery condition checked
• Dealer-level diagnostic scan for stored fault codes
• Our 52-point inspection, with anything that needs attention reported to you before any extra work is done
• Your service book stamped and your service history recorded

If the inspection finds something, we tell you what it is, why it matters, and what it would cost to fix. Nothing is added to the bill without your say-so.

Minor service or major service?

A minor service and a major service alternate through the life of your car. The minor service is the lighter one: oil, filter, fluids and checks. The major service adds the parts that are replaced at longer intervals, such as spark plugs and the full set of filters, plus a deeper inspection. When do you need a minor service

Most manufacturers specify a service roughly every 15,000 km or once a year, whichever comes first, with a minor and a major service alternating. Some older vehicles, high-mileage cars and heavily driven fleet vehicles are better served at 10,000 km. Your owner’s manual and service book set the exact interval for your car.

Signs you should not wait for the interval: the service reminder is on, the oil looks dark or low on the dipstick, the engine sounds rougher than usual, or it has been more than a year since the last stamp.
