When it snaps, they collide, and a scheduled replacement becomes a cylinder-head or engine rebuild. RS Service Centre replaces timing belts, tensioners, idlers and water pumps, and timing chains with their tensioners and guides, on every make. Dealer-level diagnostics, OEM-grade parts, a free quote before any work, and two workshops: Sandton (Wynberg) and Midrand (Halfway House).
Warning signs, and why you usually will not get one
A timing belt often fails with no warning at all, which is why the manufacturer’s interval matters more than listening for symptoms. These signs still deserve immediate action:
- Your service book says it is due, by distance or by age. Rubber hardens and cracks with time even on a low-mileage car.
- Ticking or slapping from the front of the engine. A worn belt, or a failing tensioner or idler bearing.
- Oil or coolant on the belt. A leaking cam or crank seal, or a weeping water pump, weakens the belt.
- Rattle for a few seconds on a cold start on a chain-driven engine. Typical of a stretched chain or worn tensioner and guides on many small turbo petrols and some diesels.
- Misfires, rough idle or a check-engine light with cam or crank correlation codes. The timing has drifted.
- Engine turns over but will not start after a bang or sudden loss of power. The belt or chain may already have failed. Do not keep trying to start it; call us.
What a timing belt or chain replacement at RS involves
Checking what your engine actually needs
We confirm from the manufacturer’s schedule and your service book whether your engine has a belt or a chain, the interval, and what the kit for your exact engine includes.
Timing belt kit
We replace the belt with its tensioner and idler pulleys, because a new belt on a tired tensioner fails early. Where the water pump is belt-driven we replace it too: the labour is already paid for, and a failed pump takes the new belt with it. Weeping seals are replaced. The engine is timed to specification with the correct locking tools and checked before the car leaves.
Timing chain
A stretched chain or worn guides are replaced as a set: chain, tensioner, guides and, on some engines, the oil pump chain. Timing is verified with diagnostics, not by ear.
If the belt has already snapped
On many modern engines a snapped belt bends valves, which means cylinder-head work. RS does head repairs and full engine repairs in-house, so you are not towed from one workshop to another.
Every job is covered by our 10,000 km or 6-month workmanship warranty.
How long it takes and what affects the cost
A timing belt replacement typically takes a few hours to most of a day, depending on how much has to come off to reach it. Timing chains usually take longer. We confirm the turnaround when we quote and tell you if a part needs to be ordered.
What moves the price:
- Belt or chain: chain jobs are more labour-intensive
- Your make, model and engine, and how accessible the timing side is
- Whether the water pump is belt-driven and included
- Tensioners, idlers, guides and seals, replaced as a kit
- Whether other due work (a major service, a drive belt) is done at the same time, which saves labour
Because the kit and labour differ so much by engine, we quote for free for your exact vehicle. Send us your registration or VIN.

Frequently Asked Questions
When should a timing belt be replaced?
At the interval your manufacturer sets for your exact engine, usually a distance and an age, whichever comes first. Intervals differ widely, so we check the schedule and your service book rather than quoting a generic number. If you bought a used car with no proof the belt was done, treat it as due.
Does my car have a timing belt or a timing chain?
It depends on the engine, not the badge; one manufacturer can use both across its range. Give us your registration and we will tell you.
Do timing chains need replacing?
In theory a chain lasts the life of the engine. In practice chains stretch and guides wear, especially if oil changes were skipped. A cold-start rattle or timing fault codes means it is time.
Should the water pump be replaced with the timing belt?
If the pump is driven by the timing belt, yes. It sits behind the same parts, so it costs little extra labour, and a pump failure later would destroy the new belt.
Is there a warranty on timing work?
Yes. Our workmanship is covered for 10,000 km or 6 months, whichever comes first.
