Full Engine Repairs and Rebuilds in Johannesburg
An engine that knocks, smokes or drinks oil does not always mean a new car or a new engine.
- 4.6 on Google from 476 reviews
- 10,000km / 6-month warranty
- Free quotes
- All makes and models
In many cases it means a proper rebuild. RS Service Centre repairs and rebuilds petrol and diesel engines for every make at our Sandton and Midrand workshops, with dealer-level diagnostics, quality OEM-grade parts and a 10,000 km or 6-month workmanship warranty. Diagnosis comes first, the quote is free, and you can book your car in online.
Warning signs your engine may need repair or a rebuild
Catching these early usually means a smaller job. Book a diagnostic if you notice any of the following:
- Knocking, ticking or rumbling from the engine, especially under load or at idle
- Blue or grey smoke from the exhaust, which usually points to oil getting past worn rings, guides or seals
- Oil consumption that has you topping up between services
- Loss of power or poor compression, hard starting, or a rough idle that a service did not fix
- Low oil pressure warning light, or oil that looks milky
- Overheating, especially if the car has already had a head gasket or cooling system problem (see our cylinder head repairs page)
- Metal particles in the oil found at a service
If the engine has already seized, lost oil pressure or been driven hot, stop driving it. Further running turns a repairable engine into scrap.
What an engine repair or rebuild involves
Diagnosis first, always
We do not quote a rebuild on a guess. The engine is checked with dealer-level diagnostic equipment, a compression and leak-down test where appropriate, an oil and coolant inspection, and a physical check for leaks, noises and play. Only then do we tell you whether you need a repair, a partial rebuild or a full overhaul.
Repair versus partial rebuild versus full rebuild
- Repair fixes a specific failed part: a timing chain, oil pump, head gasket or a set of injectors.
- Partial (top-end) rebuild covers the cylinder head, valves, guides and gaskets while the block stays in the car.
- Full engine rebuild (overhaul) means the engine comes out and is fully stripped. The block and head are cleaned, measured and machined where needed, worn components (bearings, rings, pistons, gaskets, seals, timing components) are replaced with quality OEM-grade parts, and the engine is reassembled to manufacturer tolerances, refitted and tested.
Petrol and diesel, every make
We rebuild German, Japanese, European and Chinese engines, from small turbo petrols to diesel bakkies and SUVs. Make-specific knowledge matters: known weak points differ between a VW TSI, a BMW N-series, a Toyota D-4D and a Ford EcoBoost, and our technicians know where to look.
Rebuild or replace? How we help you decide
A rebuild is not always the right answer, and we will tell you when it is not. We weigh:
- The condition of the block and head. If the block is cracked or badly scored beyond machining limits, a rebuild stops making sense.
- The alternatives. A reconditioned exchange engine or a good used engine can be the better call for some models, and we quote those options alongside the rebuild.
- The value and age of the car. We will say so plainly if the repair is more than the car is worth to you.
- What caused the failure. A rebuild done without fixing the cause (a blocked oil pickup, a failed turbo seal, a cooling fault) will fail again. We fix the cause.
What affects the cost of an engine rebuild
We do not publish a flat price because no two rebuilds are the same. The main cost drivers are:
- Engine type and size. A 1.4 four-cylinder petrol and a 3.0 V6 turbo diesel are very different jobs.
- Machining required. Skimming, boring, honing, line boring and crack repair add to the job when needed.
- Parts. We fit quality OEM-grade parts only, and the parts list depends on what measurement reveals.
- Ancillaries. Turbos, injectors, the water pump, the clutch or engine mounts are often best done while the engine is out (see turbo repairs).
- Labour. Some engines are simply harder to remove and refit than others.
Every job starts with a free, itemised quote after diagnosis, so you see exactly what is being done and why before any work begins.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does an engine rebuild take?
It depends on the engine, the machining needed and parts availability. We give you a realistic timeline with your quote and keep you updated if anything changes once the engine is stripped.
Is a rebuilt engine as good as a new one?
A correctly rebuilt engine, with the block and head machined to specification and quality parts fitted to manufacturer tolerances, restores the engine to sound running condition and is backed by our workmanship warranty. It is usually far more affordable than a new engine.
Can I keep driving with a knocking engine until I can book in?
We advise against it. A knock usually means bearing or piston damage that gets worse with every kilometre, and driving on can turn a rebuild into a write-off. Stop, and get it checked.
Do you rebuild diesel bakkie engines?
Yes. We work on Toyota, Isuzu, Ford, Nissan, VW and other diesel engines, as well as petrol engines of every make.
Will the rebuild be covered by a warranty?
Yes. Our workmanship is covered for 10,000 km or 6 months, and we only fit quality OEM-grade parts.
