Symptoms of a failing turbo
- Loss of power or boost, slow acceleration, or the car feeling flat uphill or when overtaking
- Whistling, whining or siren noise that rises with engine speed
- Blue or grey smoke from the exhaust, especially on deceleration or after idling, which points to oil passing turbo seals (white smoke is more often coolant, see cylinder head repairs)
- Black smoke under load, from over-fuelling when boost is missing
- Oil in the intercooler pipes or around the turbo housing
- Rising oil consumption
- Engine warning light, boost pressure fault codes or limp mode
- Grinding or rattling from the turbo, which usually means bearing or wheel damage and needs immediate attention
Keep driving with a damaged turbo and fragments of the compressor wheel, or a flood of oil, can end up in the engine. Book a diagnostic as soon as the symptoms appear.
What a turbo repair involves
Diagnosis first, and it is often not the turbo
Many “turbo failures” are something cheaper. Before we quote a turbocharger we check the whole boost system: intercooler and charge pipes for splits and loose clamps, the actuator or wastegate for sticking, vacuum lines, the boost and MAP sensors, the air filter and intake, the oil feed and return lines, and the fault codes on dealer-level diagnostics. We also check the turbo itself for shaft play, wheel damage and oil leaks. Only then do we tell you what the car needs.
Repair, recondition or replace
- Repair covers faults around the turbo: a seized actuator, a leaking oil feed pipe, a boost leak, a blocked breather.
- Reconditioning means the turbo (or its core cartridge, the CHRA) is fully stripped, cleaned, fitted with new bearings and seals and any worn wheels, then balanced and tested before refitting. Done properly, it restores the unit to specification at a lower cost than a new turbo.
- Replacement with a new OEM or OEM-grade unit is the right call when the housings are cracked or damaged, when the unit is not economically repairable, or when the owner wants the longest service life on a high-mileage or high-value car.
Fixing what killed the turbo
Turbos mostly fail because of what feeds them: dirty or degraded oil, a blocked or carboned oil feed pipe, oil starvation, foreign objects entering the intake, or sustained overboost. We replace oil feed pipes and gaskets where needed, change the oil and filter, check the intake for debris, clean oil out of the intercooler, and prime the new or reconditioned unit correctly before starting. Skip these steps and the replacement fails too. Where oil starvation has already damaged the engine, we tell you honestly and point you to our engine repairs page.
Should you repair, recondition or replace your turbo?
We quote the options side by side. Reconditioning or a core exchange usually makes sense when the housings are sound and the failure is bearings or seals. A new unit makes sense when the housings are damaged, when the car’s age and value justify it, or when a quality recon is not available for that model. A very cheap recon that has not been balanced and tested is false economy on any car. Whatever the choice, we only fit quality OEM-grade parts.
What affects the cost of a turbo repair
There is no single price, which is why we diagnose first and quote free. The main drivers:
- Make and engine. A small petrol turbo on a hatchback and a variable-geometry diesel turbo on a 3.0 bakkie are different units at different prices.
- Repair, recondition or new. Fixing a boost leak costs a fraction of a turbo. A recon or core exchange sits in the middle. A new OEM unit is the top of the range.
- Access and labour. Some turbos are on top of the engine; some need the subframe or exhaust removed.
- Related parts. Oil feed and return pipes, gaskets, oil and filter, hoses and clamps, and cleaning the intercooler.
- Consequential damage. If debris or oil has reached the engine or catalytic converter, that is quoted separately and explained.
You get a free, itemised quote with every option before any work begins.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a whistling turbo always a failing turbo?
No. A faint whistle is normal on many turbo cars. A new, louder or changing whistle often means a boost leak at a hose or intercooler joint, which is a far smaller repair. We check for leaks before we quote a turbo.
Can I drive with a blown turbo?
We advise against it. A damaged turbo can dump oil into the engine or exhaust and shed metal into the intake. If the car is in limp mode or smoking heavily, stop and call us.
Is a reconditioned turbo as good as a new one?
A properly reconditioned turbo, with new bearings and seals, balanced and tested to specification, performs to the original standard and is backed by our workmanship warranty. The key is quality reconditioning, not the cheapest unit available.
How long does a turbo replacement take?
It depends on the engine's layout and whether the unit is reconditioned or replaced from stock. We give a realistic timeline with your quote.
Why did my new turbo fail soon after fitting?
Almost always because the cause was not fixed: a blocked oil feed pipe, old oil, debris in the intake or an unresolved boost or wastegate fault. That is why cause-fixing is part of every turbo job we do.
